Children
Children are everywhere in this book. Children, as described in this book, are blank slates that are pure and kind because the world has not touched them yet. Eddie prefers the small children in the amusement park to the seething teenagers hanging around. He and his wife were even close to adopting their own until his wife got in an accident, and the money had to go toward medical bills. Eddie's fifth person, Tala, is a child who he killed accidentally in the war and she teaches him the greatest lesson of all: every life matters.
